Description:

A handcrafted drone flute in flame-torched cedar: two flutes joined side by side and played as one.

One side has the five finger holes. The other has none, so it holds a steady A underneath everything you play. That's the idea of a drone flute: one breath, two voices. The held note sits under your melody and fills a room the way two players would. It gives these flutes that deep humming quality you feel as much as hear.

Both sides are built exactly the same way, from the same wood, so they stay in tune with each other. If you already play a single flute, you'll be playing this one in about five minutes. The fingering doesn't change; you just get more sound.

Tuned to 432 Hz and played on the minor pentatonic scale. Every note belongs, so you can't play a wrong one. That makes these forgiving enough for a complete beginner to get a clean, full note on the first try.

The cedar is kissed with flame to bring out the grain. The soft summer wood darkens and the rings glow amber and gold, like firelight moving up the flute. The bird is shaped from dark wood and bound with hand-wrapped leather.

How these are made

Most of our flutes are made out in the wild, not in a shop. We work where we're camped, and the frequency of that place goes into the wood: the mountains, the deserts, the quiet. We forage our wood when we can and never cut a living tree, only what's already down. When we're somewhere the wood isn't there to be found, we buy it.
